During the work of Ellie Coates the viewer is invited into the timeless world of storytelling amazingly. A combination of inspire art drawn from myths, folklore and Renaissance painting which she creates the props with which to encourage the imagination of the spectator to interlace the narrative. All the way through the famous Greek Myth of Medusa the Gorgon Queen Ellie explores and adapts both the anatomy of this formidable character and that of the story surrounding her art. The art draw work deals with entrapment, the female role in storytelling and the close relationship between the beast and the human. Even as Ellie’s work addresses themes of snare it in turn provides the tools for leisure activity. The ethereal and mysterious feel is made even more mystifying and fabled during her drawing and making process. The surface of the paper is with difficulty prepared with layer leading layer of rabbit skin glue and gesso before graphite is functional with fussy mark making to give an otherworldly and radiant excellence.
